Jason

A trickle of sweat beads down my forearm. My hand slips, and I almost drop the weight.

“Damn,” I mutter to myself.

It’s the next morning, and I’m lifting weights in the garage. But all I can think about is Carleigh. Her lips on mine, the way she moaned in pleasure, the look of longing she gave me before she shut me down.

We were just kids when she moved away. Her dad got a business opportunity in another state. It all happened so quickly. They packed up and moved out in a week. When she broke it off with me, I was so mad at her for it. I wasted our last week together being angry and refusing to see her. By the time I’d calmed down, she’d gone.

“Damn it.”

I wipe the sweat off my hands and grab my keys. I let Carleigh Daniels walk out of my life once. I’m not going to do it a second time.

Twenty minute later, I’m pulling up outside her place. There’s a battered SUV in the drive and I peer inside as I walk past, an uneasy feeling growing in my stomach.

As I approach the house, I hear raised voices coming from inside. I can’t make out what they’re saying, but a man’s voice barks something in harsh tones.

A child starts crying, and the man yells something. Then there’s the sound of a woman pleading. Carleigh.

Without bothering to knock, I barge through the door.

There’s a man towering over Carleigh who’s cowering before him, Maisey tucked protectively behind her.

The blood rises in my veins, and my heart hammers in my chest. “Hey, get away from her.”

He turns toward me with a face full of thunder. “Who the fuck are you?”

His face is red and there’s an angry vein throbbing in his neck, which should be a warning sign, but all I can see is Carleigh’s anxious face and Maisey’s frightened tears.

I take a step toward him. “I said back off.”

He turns back to Carleigh. “You fucking this guy?”

She shakes her head quickly. “No, Karl.” Her voice is steady, placating. “He’s helping me decorate the house.”

He looks back and forth between us. “Are you fucking lying to me?”

“Hey!” He turns back to me. “Don’t speak to her like that.”

“What’s it got to do with you?”

He’s squaring up to me, but I manage to keep my voice steady. “Carleigh, take Maisey upstairs.”

Out of the corner of my eye I see her scurry away, and once they’re out of sight with the door shut, I let my rage come through.

My fist connects with his jaw, before he even knows it’s coming. He staggers backward, knocking his head against the wall. His eyes roll into the back of his head, and he slumps to the floor.

Carleigh comes running into the kitchen. She looks at Karl collapsed on the floor, then to me, flexing the fingers of my hand.

“What did you do?” She kneels over him. “Karl?” He doesn’t respond, and she checks his pulse. “He’s still breathing.”

“That’s a shame,” I blurt out.
